The CELPIP Listening test takes 47 to 55 minutes and has 6 parts. Part 1 is a problem-solving conversation between two people. Part 2 covers a daily life situation such as a phone call or workplace discussion. Part 3 features an informational passage on a general topic. Part 4 presents a news item similar to what you would hear on Canadian radio or television. Part 5 is a discussion with multiple speakers sharing different perspectives. Part 6 presents two contrasting viewpoints on a single topic.
All audio uses Canadian English accents and reflects real-life situations you would encounter in Canada. Every question is multiple choice, and each audio clip plays only once on the real test.
CELPIP Listening scores are reported on the CLB scale from 1 to 12. Scoring is based on your ability to identify main ideas, understand specific details, recognize implied meanings, and interpret speaker attitudes and opinions. Each correct answer contributes to a raw score that is converted into your final CLB level.
Because Listening is scored from a fixed number of correct answers, improving your accuracy by just a few questions can move you up a full CLB level — which directly changes the CRS points you earn for immigration. The score chart below shows the approximate raw score needed for each CLB level and the immigration points it earns.
The CELPIP Listening test has 38 scored questions. Your number of correct answers converts to a CLB level from 1 to 12. As a rough guide, you need about 27 correct (out of 38) for CLB 7, 30 for CLB 8, and 33 for CLB 9. The chart below shows the approximate raw score for each CLB level and the CRS immigration points it earns.

Approximate reference bands calibrated to public Paragon score-comparison tables. The official CELPIP uses statistical equating per test version, so treat these as a close guide, not a guarantee. CRS points are for a single applicant, first official language.
Read each question before the audio plays so you know exactly what information to listen for. Take short notes during longer passages to capture names, numbers, and key details. After answering, review the explanation for any question you got wrong to understand the reasoning behind the correct answer.
