The CELPIP Writing test has 2 tasks with a combined time of about 53 minutes. Task 1 (27 minutes) requires writing an email responding to a specific scenario. The email can be formal or informal depending on who you are writing to. Task 2 (26 minutes) is a survey response where you choose a position on a topic and defend your opinion with supporting arguments.
Both tasks expect 150 to 200 words. The entire test is typed on a computer with no handwriting required. You manage your own time within each task window.
CELPIP Writing is scored on four criteria: content and coherence (logical flow and organization of ideas), vocabulary (range and accuracy of word choice), readability (grammar, spelling, and sentence structure), and task fulfillment (whether you completed everything the prompt asked for). Scores range from CLB 1 to 12.
Each of the four criteria is rated on the CLB scale and combined into your overall Writing score, so a strong response needs balance across all of them rather than excelling at just one. The band-by-band table below shows what each level demonstrates, and CELTESTPIP includes sample responses at every CLB level from 4 to 12 so you can compare what each score looks like.
CELPIP Writing is rated on the CLB scale from 1 to 12 rather than a raw question count. The difference between levels comes down to vocabulary range, grammar accuracy, organization, and how fully you address the task. The table below describes what each band demonstrates and the CRS immigration points it earns per skill.
| CLB Level | What it demonstrates | CRS points / skill |
|---|---|---|
| 11–12 | Advanced: sophisticated vocabulary, refined organization, near error-free grammar, and full, nuanced task completion. | 34 |
| 10 | Strong control with varied vocabulary and only minor slips. | 34 |
| 9 | Effective: clear organization, varied vocabulary, generally accurate grammar, and full task coverage. | 31 |
| 8 | Good intermediate: ideas developed competently with occasional errors that don't impede meaning. | 23 |
| 7 | Adequate: ideas addressed but development is basic; functional word choice; minor grammar slips. | 17 |
| 6 | Developing: simple, repetitive vocabulary; errors sometimes affect clarity. | 9 |
| 4–5 | Initial: basic everyday English; limited range and frequent errors. | 6 |
Band descriptions summarize the official CELPIP Writing rubric (content/coherence, vocabulary, readability, task fulfillment). CRS points are for a single applicant, first official language.
For Task 1, address every bullet point listed in the prompt without skipping any. Match the tone to the scenario: formal language for complaints or professional requests, casual language for emails to friends. For Task 2, pick one clear position and support it with specific reasons and examples. Avoid sitting on the fence or switching your opinion mid-response.
CELTESTPIP provides instant AI scoring for both Writing tasks.
