By Matthew Zare, CELPIP teacher at CELTESTPIPChecked against IRCC's CRS criteria and its own calculator
Your CRS score is the number IRCC uses to rank you in the Express Entry pool. It runs from 0 to 1,200 and comes from four parts: core factors (your age, education, official languages and Canadian work, up to 500 points), your spouse or partner's factors (up to 40), skill transferability (up to 100) and additional points such as a provincial nomination (up to 600).
The calculator above follows IRCC's published criteria. Before publishing it, we ran 60 sample profiles through IRCC's own tool and every line of every result matched. Your official score is still the one IRCC shows in your Express Entry profile.
How is the CRS score calculated?
Four parts, added together. Each part has its own ceiling, and two of them change when a spouse or partner comes with you to Canada.
| Part | What it scores | Single | With a spouse or partner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core / human capital | Age, education, official languages, Canadian work | 500 | 460 |
| Spouse or partner | Their education, language and Canadian work | 0 | 40 |
| Skill transferability | Education, foreign work and trade certificates, combined with language or Canadian work | 100 | 100 |
| Additional points | Provincial nomination, French, study in Canada, a sibling in Canada | 600 | 600 |
| Total | 1,200 | 1,200 |
"With a spouse or partner" only applies when they are coming to Canada with you and are not already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Otherwise you are scored as single, even if you are married. Source: IRCC, Comprehensive Ranking System criteria.
How many CRS points do you get for age?
The most at 20 to 29, then less every year from 30, and none from 45. Age is the one factor you cannot improve, which is why entering the pool sooner rather than later protects your score.
| Age | Single | With a spouse or partner |
|---|---|---|
| 17 or younger | 0 | 0 |
| 18 | 99 | 90 |
| 19 | 105 | 95 |
| 20 to 29 | 110 | 100 |
| 30 | 105 | 95 |
| 31 | 99 | 90 |
| 32 | 94 | 85 |
| 33 | 88 | 80 |
| 34 | 83 | 75 |
| 35 | 77 | 70 |
| 36 | 72 | 65 |
| 37 | 66 | 60 |
| 38 | 61 | 55 |
| 39 | 55 | 50 |
| 40 | 50 | 45 |
| 41 | 39 | 35 |
| 42 | 28 | 25 |
| 43 | 17 | 15 |
| 44 | 6 | 5 |
| 45 or older | 0 | 0 |
How many points is your education worth?
Up to 150 points, for your highest completed credential. A credential earned outside Canada needs an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) before it counts.
| Highest education | Single | With a spouse or partner |
|---|---|---|
| Less than high school | 0 | 0 |
| High school diploma | 30 | 28 |
| One-year program (college, trade school, university) | 90 | 84 |
| Two-year program | 98 | 91 |
| Bachelor's degree, or a program of three years or longer | 120 | 112 |
| Two or more credentials, one of them three years or longer | 128 | 119 |
| Master's degree, or a professional degree needed to practise a licensed profession | 135 | 126 |
| Doctorate (PhD) | 150 | 140 |
A Canadian credential is also worth additional points: 15 for a one- or two-year diploma or certificate, and 30 for a credential of three years or longer, or a master's, professional or doctoral degree of at least one academic year.
How many CRS points does language give you?
Language is the biggest part of your score that you can still change. Each of the four skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) earns points on its own, so one weak skill costs you points even when the other three are strong.
First official language, points per skill:
| Level in each skill | Single | With a spouse or partner |
|---|---|---|
| Below CLB 4 | 0 | 0 |
| CLB 4 or 5 | 6 | 6 |
| CLB 6 | 9 | 8 |
| CLB 7 | 17 | 16 |
| CLB 8 | 23 | 22 |
| CLB 9 | 31 | 29 |
| CLB 10 or higher | 34 | 32 |
Second official language, points per skill (24 at most in all, or 22 with a spouse or partner):
| Level in each skill | Points per skill |
|---|---|
| CLB 4 or lower | 0 |
| CLB 5 or 6 | 1 |
| CLB 7 or 8 | 3 |
| CLB 9 or higher | 6 |
The jumps that matter most are CLB 7 and CLB 9. Going from CLB 6 to CLB 7 nearly doubles a skill's points, and CLB 9 in all four skills also unlocks the top tier of skill transferability. Your test result has to be converted to a CLB level first: a CELPIP level counts as the same CLB level from CLB 4 up, where IRCC's tables start, while IELTS, PTE Core, TEF and TCF each have their own table. Our CLB calculator converts all five tests skill by skill. IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English and TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French, with results under two years old (IRCC, language test results).
How much is Canadian work experience worth?
Up to 80 points for five years, and the first year counts the most. Work counts when it was skilled (a TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 job), paid, and full-time or the same total hours part-time, within the last 10 years.
| Skilled work in Canada (last 10 years) | Single | With a spouse or partner |
|---|---|---|
| None or under 1 year | 0 | 0 |
| 1 year | 40 | 35 |
| 2 years | 53 | 46 |
| 3 years | 64 | 56 |
| 4 years | 72 | 63 |
| 5 years or more | 80 | 70 |
What are skill transferability points?
Extra points for combinations that IRCC sees as a sign you will settle well. Each one pairs a strength with good language or Canadian work. There are three groups, and the total stops at 100.
Education combined with language or Canadian work (both together capped at 50):
| Your education | CLB 7+ in all four, one under 9 | CLB 9+ in all four | 1 year of Canadian work | 2+ years of Canadian work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One-year to three-year credential, or a bachelor's | 13 | 25 | 13 | 25 |
| Two or more credentials, a master's or a PhD | 25 | 50 | 25 | 50 |
Foreign work combined with language or Canadian work (both together capped at 50):
| Skilled work outside Canada | CLB 7+ in all four, one under 9 | CLB 9+ in all four | 1 year of Canadian work | 2+ years of Canadian work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 or 2 years | 13 | 25 | 13 | 25 |
| 3 years or more | 25 | 50 | 25 | 50 |
A certificate of qualification in a trade, from a Canadian province, territory or federal body, adds 25 points with CLB 5 or higher in all four skills (one or more under 7), or 50 with CLB 7 or higher in all four.
Which additional points can you get?
Four things, capped at 600 together:
- A provincial or territorial nomination: 600 points, which on its own usually means an invitation.
- French: 25 points for NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills, or 50 if you also have CLB 5 or higher in all four English skills.
- Study in Canada: 15 or 30 points, as above.
- A brother or sister living in Canada: 15 points, if they are 18 or older and a citizen or permanent resident. Your accompanying spouse's sibling counts too.
A job offer no longer adds points. IRCC stopped awarding CRS points for arranged employment on March 25, 2025, and its own tool now adds nothing for one.
How does a spouse or common-law partner change your score?
Your own ceilings drop a little, and your partner can make up the difference. When a spouse or partner comes with you and is not a citizen or permanent resident, your core factors are worth up to 460 instead of 500, and their own education, language and Canadian work can add up to 40.
| Your spouse's or partner's factor | Points |
|---|---|
| Education: high school diploma | 2 |
| Education: one-year program | 6 |
| Education: two-year program | 7 |
| Education: bachelor's or three-year program | 8 |
| Education: two or more credentials | 9 |
| Education: master's, professional degree or PhD | 10 |
| Language, per skill: CLB 5 or 6 | 1 |
| Language, per skill: CLB 7 or 8 | 3 |
| Language, per skill: CLB 9 or higher | 5 |
| Canadian work: 1 year | 5 |
| Canadian work: 3 years | 8 |
| Canadian work: 5 years or more | 10 |
If your partner has the stronger profile, it can be worth calculating the score both ways, with each of you as the principal applicant.
What CRS score do you need for an invitation?
There is no fixed pass mark. IRCC holds rounds of invitations and sets the lowest score invited in each one. Cut-offs depend on how many candidates are in the pool, how many invitations the round offers and the type of round: general rounds, rounds for one program such as the Canadian Experience Class or provincial nominees, and category rounds such as French-language proficiency. IRCC publishes every past round on its rounds of invitations page.
How can you raise your CRS score?
Start with language. It is the largest part of the score you control:
- Language: for a single applicant, moving a skill from CLB 7 to CLB 9 adds 14 points, so 56 across all four skills, before any skill transferability points it also unlocks.
- French: NCLC 7 in all four French skills as a second language adds 12 second-language points and 50 additional points if your English is CLB 5 or higher.
- Canadian work: your first year in Canada is worth 40 points for a single applicant, plus transferability points.
- Education: a master's instead of a bachelor's adds 15 core points, and can move you up a transferability tier.
- A provincial nomination adds 600.
The "Ways to add points" list in the calculator works these out for your own answers, caps included. If CELPIP is your English test, scored practice sets for every part show which skill is holding your CLB down.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum CRS score?
1,200 points. Core factors are worth up to 500 (460 with an accompanying spouse or partner), spouse factors up to 40, skill transferability up to 100 and additional points up to 600.
Do job offers still give CRS points?
No. IRCC stopped awarding points for arranged employment on March 25, 2025. A job offer can still matter for eligibility in some programs, but it no longer adds to your CRS score.
Does this calculator give the same result as IRCC's tool?
Yes for the arithmetic. On October 13, 2026 we ran 60 sample profiles through IRCC's own Check your score tool and every line of every result matched. Your official score is the one IRCC shows in your Express Entry profile.
Which language tests count for Express Entry?
Five tests. CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. Your results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you apply.
Does my spouse's language score count?
Only if they come with you and are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Their first official language is worth up to 5 points per skill, 20 in all, as part of the 40 spouse points.
Is a higher CELPIP level worth retaking the test for?
Often, yes. For a single applicant, CLB 9 instead of CLB 7 adds 14 points per skill, 56 across four skills, and CLB 9 in all four can add up to 50 more through skill transferability.
Check your CELPIP level before you book
Your CRS score moves most with language, and language is the part you can train. Answer a scored practice set in every CELPIP part to see which skill is holding you below CLB 9. If you already have scores from another test, the CLB calculator shows the level and points for each skill.
IRCC's own calculator is on its Check your score page.
