The CELPIP Reading test is scored out of 38 questions. Your number of correct answers converts to a CELPIP level from M to 12, and that level equals your CLB level on a 1:1 basis; a CELPIP 9 is CLB 9. As a rough guide, 31–33 correct maps to Level 9, and 24–28 correct maps to Level 7, the usual Express Entry minimum. The full chart is below.

Your CELPIP Reading result looks simple. A single number from M to 12; but that number decides your CLB level, your CRS points, and whether you clear the bar for Express Entry, a PNP, or the program you're applying to. What is the CELPIP Reading score chart?

The CELPIP Reading score chart maps the number of questions you answered correctly (your raw score, out of 38) to a CELPIP Reading level from M to 12. That level then equals the same Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level with no extra conversion: CELPIP 7 is CLB 7, CELPIP 9 is CLB 9.

Why the ranges overlap: Paragon Testing Enterprises "equates" every test form, meaning a slightly harder version needs a few less correct answers for the same level. So these bands are approximate; the same raw score can land one level higher or lower depending on your test version. Treat them as a close guide, not a guarantee. How is the CELPIP Reading raw score (out of 38) calculated?

Your raw score is simply the number of the 38 Reading questions you answered correctly. You get one point per correct answer, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should answer every question, even when you're guessing.

The Reading test has four parts: reading correspondence (emails and messages), reading to apply a diagram, reading for information, and reading for viewpoints. All four feed into the same 38-question raw score, which is then converted to your CELPIP level using the equated chart above. Because there's no negative marking, leaving a question blank only costs you. In other words, a guess has upside and no downside. What CLB level does each CELPIP Reading score equal?

Every CELPIP level equals the same CLB level, one to one. This is the reason many candidates find CELPIP simpler to interpret than IELTS: there's no separate conversion table to read.

What CELPIP Reading score do I need for Express Entry and PR?

For most Express Entry programs you need CELPIP Reading 7 (CLB 7). That's the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and for Canadian Experience Class applicants in TEER 0 or 1 jobs. Some paths are lower: the Federal Skilled Trades Program accepts CLB 4 in Reading, and CEC TEER 2/3 jobs need CLB 5. (See the full minimum CELPIP scores for every immigration program.)

Remember that IRCC assesses each skill independently. For example, a high Listening score can't rescue a low Reading score. You have to clear the minimum in Reading on its own. What does each CELPIP Reading level mean?

Beyond the number, each level describes what you can actually do with written English:

• Levels 10–12: You accurately interpret complex passages, implied meaning, tone, and detailed arguments; near-native reading.
• Level 9: You interpret viewpoints, implied meaning, and complex arguments with high accuracy.
• Level 8: You understand detailed passages and paraphrased information reliably.
• Level 7: You grasp main ideas, supporting details, and common workplace or immigration texts.
• Level 6: You handle moderately complex content with reasonable accuracy.
• Level 5: You understand familiar, straightforward passages.
• Level 4: You read simple, explicit content.
• Level 3 and M: Limited to minimal comprehension; below immigration minimums.

Is the CELPIP General reading score chart different?

No; there is only one Reading scoring scale, and it's the same chart whether people call it the "CELPIP General reading score chart" or just the "CELPIP reading score chart." The important distinction is which test type you take:

• CELPIP-General tests all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and is what you use for PR and Express Entry. It gives you a Reading score.
• CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and is used for Canadian citizenship. It has no Reading section, so it produces no Reading score or Reading CLB.

So if you need a Reading score, you need CELPIP-General. If you're only applying for citizenship, Reading doesn't apply to you at all.

How long is a CELPIP Reading score valid?

Your CELPIP scores — Reading included — are valid for two years from your test date for immigration purposes. IRCC needs a valid score both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application. If your score expires while your profile is active, the profile becomes incomplete and can't be drawn.
